exclusively that the new Sri Lankan government was expediting plans to legalize gay and lesbian marriages within the first 100 days. 100-Day Government Hurrying to Legalize Gay Marriage
Yesterday, at the UNP headquarters Sirikotha, the Sirisena-Wickremasinghe government took another forward step towards this plan.
A meeting was held between UNP members at representatives of gay and lesbian groups at the Party Headquarters to expedite legalizing same sex marriage. It was proposed to open a separate ministry to handle the rights of gays and lesbians. Legislation towards this end will be shortly introduced and budget appropriations set aside UNP members assured.
Representatives of the gay community praised the Sirisena-Wickremasinghe government for the great progress made since they took power to promote same sex marriage and advance the rights of the gay people. They gave special thanks to Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera for his enormous contribution to the gay cause.
Samaraweera recently voted in favor of a measure introduced by the UN Secretary-General to offer marital benefits to gays and lesbians.
Sri Lanka was the only South Asian country that voted in favor of the UN measure.
